Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo has returned to work after taking an extended medical leave to seek treatment for clinical depression. In an October 2nd post on X, Hidalgo expressed her gratitude for the support she received during her time off.

"I'm back," Hidalgo wrote. "Thanks for all the love and support, Harris County. I'm over the moon to be back at work and feel so lucky to have been able to get the help I did."

Hidalgo, who was first elected to the highest post in Harris County in 2018 and is currently serving her second term, checked into an inpatient facility in early August. During her absence, Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis temporarily took over her responsibilities as the most senior member of the Harris County Commissioners Court.

It is worth noting that Hidalgo has been a strong advocate for mental health services since her first day in office. She has emphasized the importance of prioritizing mental well-being and has worked to raise awareness about mental health issues.

However, Hidalgo's return to work was not without controversy. Shortly after she settled back into her office, a lawsuit seeking her removal as the county's chief executive was filed. The lawsuit, filed by five plaintiffs, alleges that Hidalgo deserted her office and neglected her duties and responsibilities.

Despite the legal challenges, Hidalgo's Republican challenger in the last fall's elections, Alexandra del Moral Mealer, recently dropped her lawsuit challenging the election results. She has, however, vowed to work with lawmakers in Austin to ensure that future races follow the Texas Election Code.

Hidalgo's return to work is a positive step forward, not only for her personally but also for the county she serves. Her dedication to seeking treatment for her mental health and her openness about her struggles can serve as an inspiration for others facing similar challenges.
