University of Houston-Downtown President Blanchard delivers State of the University address

On September 26th, University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) President Dr. Loren J. Blanchard delivered his State of the University Address at the school’s Wilhelmina Cullen Robertson Auditorium. Blanchard, who has been president since March 2021, used the address to highlight the previous year’s accomplishments and provide a glimpse into future developments for UHD.

Blanchard emphasized the implementation of UHD's strategic plan, titled "A New Paradigm," which focuses on student success. He stated, "Our primary goal has student success at its center." This strategic plan has been instrumental in driving the university's progress over the past year.

Among the accomplishments highlighted by Blanchard, Houston CW affiliate KIAH reported improvements to the Student Affairs Department, the opening of a new basic needs center, and the distribution of over $88,000 in emergency financial assistance to 276 students. These initiatives demonstrate UHD's commitment to supporting its students and ensuring their well-being.

Another area of focus under Blanchard's leadership has been the prioritization of students' mental health. UHD has expanded its counseling staff and provided mental health first aid training to over 100 faculty and staff members, as well as 50 UHD police officers. In the past year, the university has offered more than 3,000 counseling sessions to address the mental health needs of its student body.

The State of the University Address was attended by University of Houston System (UHS) Chancellor Dr. Renu Khator, who also serves as the president of the flagship campus. Khator commended UHD on its achievements, stating, "Congratulations, UHD family, on your many achievements. Powerful address by President Blanchard this morning. Go Gators!"

President Blanchard's State of the University Address provided an opportunity to highlight the progress made at UHD and outline the university's future plans. With a focus on student success and well-being, UHD continues to strive for excellence in its academic offerings and support services.
