Michael Slabic, a wealth management advisor at Northwestern Mutual – Houston and resident of that city, has been selected as a recipient of the 2023 Community Service Award.

As a winner, Slabic is receiving a $15,000 grant for The Periwinkle Foundation, a Houston-based program helping those with cancer, and an additional $5,000 grant for supporting an organization connected to Northwestern Mutual’s Childhood Cancer Program. This program is a decade-long initiative that aims to support children with cancer by funding research and providing assistance to families affected by the disease.

Northwestern Mutual is honoring its financial advisors for their philanthropic efforts through the 2023 Community Service Awards. This awards program, now in its 28th year, recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and volunteerism by distributing $270,000 to nonprofits across the country.

“Northwestern Mutual is a company built on helping people, and it is inspiring to see the impact that these financial advisors are making on their communities through selfless contributions,” Northwestern Mutual Foundation President Steve Radke said in a press release. “I’m honored to work alongside these dedicated advisors who embody our company’s values and commitment to the communities we serve.”

The Periwinkle Foundation is dedicated to developing and delivering programs that have a positive impact on the lives of children, young adults and families who are facing cancer and other life-threatening conditions. What began as a simple camp for children with cancer has since grown into a comprehensive range of camps, arts programs and survivor programs that benefit over 14,000 children, teens, families and long-term survivors.

Thanks to Slabic's involvement and his ability to sustain great relationships with clients and friends, he has raised over $196,000 for the organization. This significant contribution has allowed The Periwinkle Foundation to continue adding new programs that enhance the quality of life for patients and families being treated at the Texas Children's Hospital.

“Each year, more than 14,000 children are touched by The Periwinkle Foundation’s programs free of charge,” Slabic said in a press release. “The Periwinkle Foundation provides opportunities for these special children and their families to heal emotionally, lead fuller lives and become stronger survivors. The grant will be used to continue and expand these very important and impactful programs.”

Since 1995, the Northwestern Mutual Foundation has donated almost $7 million to nonprofit organizations throughout the country. By recognizing the volunteer efforts of its financial advisors, the company reinforces its commitment to making a positive impact in the communities it serves.
