A Houston-area school district is mourning the loss of a longtime middle school teacher and coach, Houston-based media outlets reported.
Authorities said 65-year-old David Liggio was allegedly murdered at his League City residence on Friday by his young adult son.
According to Houston NBC affiliate KPRC, the elder Liggio was employed by the Clear Creek Independent School District (CCISD) as a teacher and coach at Westbrook Intermediate School in Friendswood for almost 20 years.
CCISD, which educates more than 40,000 students and is the 29th largest district in the state, said in a statement obtained by KPRC that Liggio worked as a gym teacher and coached football, track and cross-country.
“As one can imagine, this is a difficult time for the students and staff at Westbrook Intermediate,” the statement read.
The school district’s grief counseling team assembled at Westbrook on Monday to listen to students and staff impacted by the tragedy.
Authorities said 23-year-old Nicholas Robert Liggio has been charged in the death of his father, Houston ABC affiliate KTRK reported.
The younger Liggio allegedly engaged in a standoff with law enforcement before attempting to escape.
He was tracked to a neighbor’s garage where he was arrested, per KTRK.
KTRK reported that the suspect was booked at the League City Jail and initially imposed a bond of $180,000.
He is also accused of burglary of a habitation. Citing jail records, the station reported that his bond has since increased by $100,000.
Funeral arrangements for the late educator are reportedly pending.
