On Dec. 19, the Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC) popped the champagne at its annual Champagne & Ribs fundraiser, hosted by Grammy-award-winning writer and producer Bryan-Michael Cox of Houston.

The event, which was sold out for the first time since its inception two years ago, was held to raise funds for the Houston community to continue to visit the museum free of charge.

Fundraiser guests were given the chance to browse new exhibits, such as "Negative Women: Four Photographers Questioning Boundaries," which was curated by HMAAC Chief Curator Christopher Blay. The exhibit displays the works of women both in the U.S. and abroad who rebel against accepted societal narratives and tell complete histories.

Music was provided by DJ Def Jam Blaster, alongside neo-soul artist Sam Thousand, while guests partook in champagne, ribs (original and honey-glazed), a potato bar and salmon bites.

HMAAC Chief Operating Officer Davinia Reed presented awards to Fox 26 anchors Jonathan Martin and Isiah Carey for their continuous support of the museum. While accepting this award, Carey quoted his famous viral tagline "Get me out of this country town!" much to the amusement of the crowd.

More information on the HMAAC can be found on its official website.
