The Houston Airport System (HAS) advised travelers flying in and out of George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) to have an advanced game plan beginning Monday, as Houston’s largest airport tends to perform utility work, according to a press release.
The release said that the monthlong work will involve temporary lane closures on North Terminal Road, which leads to Terminals C, D and E.
Per HAS, CenterPoint Energy will come in to relocate and install crucial electrical infrastructure for IAH’s new international terminal.
The power will be provided to Terminal D, a new checked baggage inspection facility and the inter-terminal tram system.
“This work is complex and requires significant underground coordination and navigation to avoid utilities and obstructions,” officials said in the release.
HAS warned that traffic congestion may be exacerbated, especially from 5 to 8 p.m., adding it has used traffic simulations, extensive roadway modeling and real-time testing days before commencing the project.
“Houston Airports recommends people prepare for their trip to Bush Airport by planning ahead and utilizing resources like reserving garage parking online, waiting in cellphone lots until an arriving passenger is curbside and building an extra hour into your usual arrival time should you arrive during peak travel hours,” officials said in the release.
Houston ABC affiliate KTRK reported that the upcoming work is part of the IAH Terminal Redevelopment Program.
HAS expects a completion date for the project in late 2024, per the station.
Houston Public Media reported that IAH received $40 million last month in infrastructure funding to be spent on airport security checkpoints, baggage claim areas, gates and pickup and drop off areas.
