United Airlines hosted a large group of young girls from the Houston area on Saturday with the hope of inspiring a new generation of female leaders in the aviation industry, according to Houston-based media outlets’ reports.
Houston FOX affiliate KRIV reported that the students gathered at the legacy carrier’s Hangar X facility at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) as part of the global “Girls in Aviation Day.”
Citing nonprofit organization Women in Aviation International, KRIV reported that women account for merely 7% of pilots in the U.S.
Attendee Jessica Moore may be one of those who could help boost the figure in the future.
"Flying is just amazing," she told KRIV. "You get to see everything from above. It’s an unbeatable view. That’s definitely something I want to do in my future."
Girls in Aviation Day wasn’t just celebrated in the U.S. but in Kenya, Nigeria and Canada as well, KRIV reported.
A United official told the station that the recent pilot shortage has made the event more important than ever.
“It’s important for us to educate women today to let them know what opportunities exist for them now and in the future,” Delilah Jones-Bardlette said, per KRIV.
Houston NBC affiliate KPRC reported that the participants, who came from the Houston and Aldine school districts, learned about the workings of aviation from the ticket counter to the tarmac.
According to KPRC, Houston Vice Mayor Pro-Tem Martha Castex-Tatum and Space Center Houston’s Kathleen Swain joined the girls at the event, which United hosted in partnership with Women in Aviation International.
Last June, United hosted a Juneteenth-themed flight for disadvantaged youth, which was also a way to introduce aviation as a career choice.
