New data from the Houston Police Department (HPD) released on Tuesday shows that Chevy and GMC trucks are the most sought-after by thieves within the city this year, according to a report from Houston FOX affiliate KRIV.

HPD numbers through July indicate the Chevy Silverado – at 1,490 – to be the most stolen vehicle in Houston ahead of the GMC Sierra 1500 at 659, KRIV reported.

The Ford F-150, the Ford F-250 and the Dodge Ram rounded out the top five, according to the station.

Sergeant Tracy Hicks from HPD’s auto theft division said the trucks are “the type they’re stealing.”

"Maybe the top of the line, but it doesn’t have all of the extras, because it blends in. It doesn’t stick out in traffic," Hicks told KRIV.

The station reported that since General Motors makes both Chevy and GMC trucks, it’s easy to spot the trend with the number of stolen Chevy and GMC trucks put together.

"Crooks have figured out how to steal these with little or no tools at all,” Hicks said, per the station.

According to KRIV, among those vehicles is a 2003 Chevy Silverado belonging to Jackelin Garcia’s husband.

The Spring Branch resident said the truck was stolen twice in the last four months.

“There’s just a lot of people stealing cars nowadays, I guess,” Garcia said, KRIV reported.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on its website that vehicular theft in the U.S. occurred nearly every 40 seconds in 2020.

It advised motorists to take their keys with them, close and lock all windows and doors, park in well-lit areas and not to leave valuables inside.

Hicks told KRIV that people should invest in security tools for their vehicles.
