Friends and loved ones are mourning the passing of a Galveston high school student who was killed on Friday in a car accident not too far from where he started his freshman year, Houston-based media outlets reported.

Houston ABC affiliate KPRC reported that 14-year-old Mason Nelson was just two weeks into the ninth grade at Ball High School (BHS) when he lost his life.

According to the station, authorities say that Nelson was among the four passengers of a Jeep that was struck by a speeding sports utility vehicle (SUV).

KTRK reported that the driver of the SUV was a 28-year-old man who had just been paroled from prison the day of the collision.

Authorities charged Keith Brazier with one count of murder. Purportedly possessing a lengthy rap sheet, Brazier was held on a $500,000 bond as of press time.

Brazier had been convicted of driving while intoxicated (DWI) three times, per KTRK.

The station reported that Nelson was an avid baseball player and a devout person of faith.

A memorial to Nelson was erected at the intersection of Avenue O and 41st Street.

"(He was a) really good kid,” an unidentified parent told KTRK. “Full of spirit, full of life and life took him in the blink of an eye."

Classmates told Houston CBS affiliate KHOU that they’ll remember Mason for his humor.

The fatal school zone accident occurred a month after that in Galveston in which a Fort Bend County family of four was killed while riding a golf cart.

Houston Daily reported in August that a suspected drunk driver collided with the golf cart near the intersection of 33rd Street and Avenue R.

The incident yielded a lawsuit, as well as prompted Galveston leaders to reexamine the city’s golf cart ordinance.
