According to former high-ranking officials and immigration experts, human trafficking at the southern border is becoming a crisis. Without any intervention from the current administration, the situation has worsened rapidly.

Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that record-breaking illegal immigration is threatening the safety of Americans. Recently, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released data showing that arrests at the southern border have reached all-time highs, nearing 2 million apprehensions.

In a statement Saturday on Twitter, Pompeo said, "Illegal immigration is a threat to our national security. Without strong borders, we fail to protect our people and our nation."

A total of 1.95 million apprehensions have taken place at the southern border through action by CBP agents from October 2021 through September 2022. Compared to last year, when 1.73 million arrests happened at the southern border between October 2020 and September 2021, this number demonstrates a rise in southern border arrests.

With no relief in sight, it is expected that 2 million arrests will be made by the end of fiscal year 2022, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Illegal immigration is under fire from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott as arrest numbers rise at the border. Thousands of migrants seeking asylum were bussed into New York and Washington, D.C., as part of Abbott's second re-election campaign to enforce immigration restrictions. In addition to deploying National Guard troops to the border, Abbott ordered more stringent inspections of semi-trucks and tractor trailers crossing the border from Mexico.

According to Fox News, investigative reporter Sara Carter recently interviewed a Central American human smuggler—speaking on the condition of anonymity.

The smuggler said that he is “the guy who takes people to the U.S. – immigrants, to be exact”, and works as a smuggler because he likes “to take the risk of doing it, and I knew that people would get a lot of money out of it.”

Despite his illicit trade, the anonymous human smuggler expressed serious concerns about the fate of children being smuggled across the U.S.-Mexican border, noting that drug cartels are “asking for children, for them to traffic with drugs and everything.”

After her interview with the smuggler, Carter said, “I want the American people to understand what kind of monsters these people are and what they are willing to do to children and what the Biden Administration is doing by perpetuating this border chaos."
