An award-winning Houston celebrity chef has announced his departure from the culinary empire he started, Houston-based media outlets reported.

Chris Shepherd said on Wednesday he was stepping away from Underbelly Hospitality to devote his time to smaller projects and his nonprofit organization, according to Houston CBS affiliate KHOU.

KHOU reported that Shepherd, whose accolades include an award from the James Beard Foundation, founded Underbelly a decade ago.

"It’s time for me to focus on smaller projects and dedicate more time to Southern Smoke,” Shepherd said in a statement that was distributed to the media. “Underbelly Hospitality is in great hands with MLB Capital Partners and the team we have assembled over the last five years.”

He added that he’s proud of what the Underbelly eateries have accomplished, expressing gratitude to everyone affiliated with the restaurant group.

Houston ABC affiliate KTRK reported that Shepherd has long been considered the face of Underbelly.

The company’s current roster of establishments include Georgia James, GJ Tavern, Underbelly Burger and Wild Oats, with at least one new restaurant set to open its doors, per KTRK.

Shepherd assured Houstonians that he’s not leaving the Bayou City anytime soon, the station reported.

“Thank you, Houston, for the past, present and future support,” he said in his statement. “This is my home, and I'm not going anywhere. I'm excited to see what the future holds for all of us.”

KTRK reported that Underbelly praised its founder as “an incredible talent” in the same statement.

MLB Capital Partners managing partner Todd Mason said the company is grateful for Shepherd’s “immense contributions.”

“Our talented team will continue to deliver Underbelly’s signature fare with unmatched technique and hospitality,” Mason said, according to the station. “Our focus has been and will continue to be the delivery of thoughtful food and beverage experiences."

KTRK reported that Shepherd founded Southern Smoke to financially help food and beverage workers, and its Southern Smoke Festival is slated for October.
