Wednesday was the unofficial Houston holiday known as 713 Day and one of the city’s well-known recording artists paired up with the Houston Astros to celebrate the occasion.
Houston-based media outlets and the Astros themselves reported that rapper Bun B launched a special hat collection with the American League (AL) West-leading team.
“We are very excited to once again partner with Bun B for the third time on this exclusive 713 collection,” Astros Vice President of Retail and Merchandising Tom Jennings said in the release. “The detail on these hats are incredible and encompass everything we celebrate about Houston on 713 Day.”
According to Houston CBS affiliate KHOU, the collection consists of four hats – namely, the 7-1-3 Hat, the 2-8-1 Hat, the Concept Moon Man Hat and the Trill OG Hat – that feature the Astros’ familiar star logo and other graphics associated with the franchise like the Astrodome and representations from Bun B’s career, which spans more than 30 years.
Fans flocked to the team’s store at Minute Maid Park to buy the new lids and meet Bun B himself, with lines stretching outside the venue despite the temperature soaring above the century mark.
Houston ABC affiliate KTRK reported that 713 Day is derived from the city’s first area code and is celebrated on 13th day of the seventh month of the year, which is July 13.
According to KTRK, Bun B, whose real name is Bernard Freeman, was spotted wearing the highly priced 7-1-3 Hat when he threw the ceremonial first pitch at a recent Astros game.
The hat is black with the rapper’s logo on the front and the Astros logo in gold on the side.
Among the hats, the 7-1-3 crown comes with a $713 price tag since it’s packaged in an orange, custom designed, Houston slab inspired collectors’ box, per the Astros’ release.
The 2-8-1 Hat costs $281 while the Concept Moon Man and Trill OG hats come in at $60, the release said.
This year has kept the 49-year-old Bun B, whose career began as an adolescent in Southeast Texas, really busy.
After selling out the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) in March, the rapper ventured out west for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California the next month to promote his new culinary venture, Trill Burgers.
According to the team, the hats are only available for purchase at the Union Station store at 1661 Texas Ave.
