William P. Hobby Airport experienced an air conditioning (AC) outage on Saturday (May 21), according to a report from Houston CBS affiliate KHOU.
The station reported that the airport's AC systems went down at 7:30 p.m. and were restored some six hours later.
Hobby Airport spokesperson Augusto Bernal said that airport dealt with a similar issue on Friday (May 20), according to KHOU.
“Yesterday, it started in the hours of the afternoon," Bernal told the station. "Everything was resolved late afternoon.”
A complaint from a passenger on Saturday prompted airport officials to apologize via social media, KHOU reported.
"We are sorry about this," the airport's official Twitter account said. "Our team is on-site working to resolve the issue as soon as possible."
The heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system was overwhelmed by the demand, airport representatives told the station.
KHOU reported that airport employees set up fans and distributed bottled water to passengers as inside temperatures increased throughout the day.
Despite the situation, arriving and departing flights were unaffected, per the station.
An unidentified traveler described the ordeal as "dreadful," KHOU reported.
"I fell asleep in the heat and I woke up drenched in sweat," the passenger told the station.
The outage occurred just as Texans express concern about the state's power grid and its readiness for summer.
According to a report from KHOU, the Houston Daily reported, Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) interim CEO Brad Jones asserted that the independent system operator is prepared to handle demand amid soaring temperatures.
