The special election for the Houston-area Texas House of Representatives seat vacated by the retired Garnet Coleman has been won by Jolanda Jones, per cumulative results, Houston CBS affiliate KHOU reported

According to KHOU, Jones bested opponent Danielle Keys Bess with a little more than 50% of the vote for the contest for Texas House District 147, which was held on Saturday (May 7).

The station reported that after the election is certified and Jones is sworn in as Coleman's successor, she and Keyes will compete again in the Democratic runoff for the seat on May 24.

"It was a different kind of campaign because there are two separate elections,” Jones said, per KHOU.

Coleman retired from the state legislature in February.

Bess echoed her opponent's explanation about the uniqueness of the race.

"It's still a race," she told the station. "We've been running two campaigns at the same time."

Jones said there's about two weeks until the runoff.

District 147 consists of a portion of central and southeast Houston, KHOU reported.

The area has been redistricted following the release of the most recent U.S. Census figures, according to the station.

In terms of the primary runoff, Jones looks to secure the seat once more while Bess has another opportunity to compete for the office.
