Authorities released the identities of the two children who perished in Saturday's (April 30) house fire in Galveston, according to reports from Houston-based media outlets.

According to Houston NBC affiliate KPRC, the victims were identified by loved ones as Jade and Logan Jones.

Their father, whom KPRC reported successfully escaped but tried to rescue the girl and the boy, is Dustin Jones, who works for the Galveston Fire Department (GFD).

According to the coroner's office, Houston FOX affiliate KRIV reported, smoke inhalation was the likely cause of the children's deaths.

The incident occurred at a residence on Avenue K near 21st Street a little after 2:30 a.m. As of this writing, an investigation into what caused the blaze was being conducted by the Galveston fire marshal.

Galveston's fire chief told Houston ABC affiliate KTRK that investigators could determine the blaze to be accidental.

According to KTRK, the elder Jones's GFD colleagues are taking the incident hard.

Dustin Jones has worked for the fire department for nearly four years, per the station.

KPRC reported that the front of the fire-damaged apartment became a makeshift memorial to two-year-old Logan and three-year-old Jade, with people leaving momentoes.

Among those who paid their respects was Lacey Stolver, who told the station that she grew up with the girl's mother.

“We just came to pay our respects because I got a daughter and I don’t know what I would do," Stolver, who was accompanied by her daughter, said, KPRC reported. "They’re in my prayers."
