Miramar, Florida-based Spirit Airlines will debut Houston-Monterrey, Mexico (MTY) service in June.

Spirit will start service between George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Monterrey International Airport on June 22, pending government approval, the Houston Business Journal reported.

The carrier will also commence Austin-Monterey flights on the same day, with the service being the only nonstop route between the Texas state capital and the capital of the northeastern Mexican state of Nuevo León, a company issued press release said.

“We’re excited about growing our international service from Texas with new daily nonservice from Austin (AUS) and Houston (IAH) to Monterrey, Mexico," Spirit Vice President of Network Planning John Kirby said in the release. "Whether traveling for leisure or to visit friends and relatives, Spirit Airlines continues to provide our Guests with More Go.”

Spirit offers seven international flights and flies to 17 domestic destinations from Bush Airport, or IAH.

Last year, the airline launched flights from Houston to Palmerola International Airport near Comayagua, Honduras and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, the Houston Business Journal reported.

Last month, Denver-based carrier Frontier Airlines purchased Spirit in a deal worth almost $7 billion, according to the publication.

Frontier flies out of Bush but not William P. Hobby on the city's south side.

The airline; however, announced that it'll commence operations out of Hobby, or HOU in May.

“We’re excited to expand in Houston and add William P. Hobby Airport to our route map with three nonstop routes beginning this May," Josh Flyr, the vice president of network and operational design for Frontier Airlines, said, the Houston Daily reported.
