A ubiquitous site in its native Canada and in the northern U.S., bakery and coffee chain Tim Hortons is eager to tap into the culinarily diverse Houston market.
The Houston Chronicle’s preview arts & entertainment guide reported that Houston will be the first in Texas to house a Tim Hortons franchise.
Ricardo Azevedo, regional president of Tim Hortons U.S., said Houston showed “significant growth opportunity.”
“We chose to put down roots in Houston because we love this city's friendly hospitality, unique culture and strong sense of community,” Azevedo said.
Considered an icon in the Great White North just like the maple leaf and hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, Tim Hortons is famous for a concoction called Timbits, which are doughnut holes that come in a variety of flavors.
Tim Hortons, which also serves specialty coffee drinks, doughnuts, all-day breakfast and sandwiches, announced its plans with the help of pop superstar Justin Bieber during a commercial that aired during the Houston Texans’ 33-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Dec. 12, the Chronicle reported.
According to the publication, Bieber himself has a new item on the menu baring his name: Timbiebs Timbits.
The Houston location and several others in the U.S. are slated to open next summer.
They’ll be additions to a roster that currently boasts 600 American locations and more than 5,000 branches globally.
Eater Houston reported that the Canadian fast food giant traces its roots to 1964 when the first “Timmies,” as they’re affectionally called north of the border, opened in Ontario, the country’s largest province in terms of population.
The company’s namesake is Miles Gilbert "Tim" Horton, an NHL player who logged a combined 24 seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres.
ABC13 reported that Houston will be home to several “Timmies,” but the company didn’t disclose the exact locations of these shops.
