Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has traveled to Scotland to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP26.
Turner said that the conference was crucial to the future of the city.
“The decisions that are made here will directly impact every single Houstonian," he said.
Turner joins leaders from around the world at the summit that has been described as “the last best chance” to fight global warming, according to KHOU.
The news station reported that Turner had been invited to the conference based on his leadership roles with three groups that were participating at the event.
The event's website explains that COP26 "will bring parties together to accelerate action toward the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change."
Turner added that he was working with the energy sector on initiatives to move policies forward.
“I’ve talked to Chevron, Shell, ExxonMobil about carbon capture utilization and storage. So, those plans are already underway. I’ve talked to the energy sector about plastic recycling on a major scale,” Turner said.
He added that members of Houston’s innovation ecosystem that can collaborate to scale groundbreaking climatetech solutions was crucial to finding a solution.
"Partnerships are essential to the future of clean energy. They're essential to scaling new companies that reduce our emissions while growing our economy," he said.
