An infrastructure project intended to curb flooding is almost complete, according to Harris County leaders.
Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said that the project has already begun to show its effectiveness.
"Excited to see our Brays Bayou project nearing completion,” she said. “We’ve worked to get this done as fast as possible and have already seen it make a difference during heavy rains. I’m happy for the residents who live nearby, who can hopefully rest a little easier."
The Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) construction timeline for Brays Bayou has been ongoing for 20 years, while residents along the project's construction path have had to deal with heavy traffic during that time, the development is expected to end notorious flooding in the area, according to ABC13.
HCFCD has been joined by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) and several local initiatives on projects to reduce the risk of flooding along Brays Bayou.
The development consists of over 75 projects throughout the 31 miles of Brays Bayou, along with reducing flood risks, the project will bring much-needed greenspace and recreational amenities to the surrounding communities.
The entire project is in its final phase and is expected to be finished by early next year.
HCFCD is also working on a major channel improvement project along White Oak Bayou starting at FM 1960 and Hunting Bayou at the 610 North Loop.
