Doug Griffith, the president of the Houston Police Officers Union (HPOU), has demanded a Harris County judge step down from the bench following the fatal shooting death of an officer.
Houston Police Department Senior Officer William “Bill” Jeffrey on Sept. 20 was gunned down by 30-year-old Deon Ledet while serving an arrest warrant in the 5300 block of Aeropark.
Click2Houston reported that Griffith called for the resignation of Judge Greg Glass of the 208th District Court, who the Harris County District Attorney’s Office said lowered a pair of bonds for Ledet set by Magistrate Lionel Castro that were supposed to be declined.
“He needs to have the integrity to step down. Until he decides to step up and explain himself, we will continue to come after him. I will actively search for people who will run against him,” the HPOU head told the station.
KHOU reported that Ledet opened fire on Jeffrey and his partner, Sergeant Michael Vance.
Vance sustained injuries and was hospitalized while Ledet himself was fatally shot after the incident.
Glass supposedly refused to comment on his decision to lower the bonds from $20,000 and $40,000 to $10,000 and $20,000 last fall.
“He needs to be out in the forefront explaining himself as to why he did what he did,” Griffith told Click2Houston.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, who described the late Jeffrey on Twitter as “an exemplary protector of the people of our city,” said judges have the responsibility of being mindful as to who appears before them each and every day.
“You can’t ignore what’s happening out here in the real world,” Turner told Click2Houston.
Born in New Jersey in 1967, Jeffrey graduated from Spring High School and attended Sam Houston State University.
He served in the Navy before joining HPD in 1990.
Jeffrey is survived by his wife Susanne, daughter Lacie and granddaughter Laney.
