A grassroots community-based program that got its start in 1989 serving Houston’s inner-city neighborhoods has expanded this year and will help more Houston residents get the fresh foods that they need to create healthy, fresh meals.

Target Hunger celebrated the opening of their new mobile pantry on Aug. 25. This pantry will deliver fresh foods to Houston residents who find that their access to fresh, healthy foods is challenged. The Target Hunger Mobile Food Pantry is a food pantry on wheels that distributes fresh, healthy foods like dairy, produce and meats to underserved neighborhoods in Houston.

Target Hunger has six brick-and-mortar food pantries throughout the community, a home delivery program, two gardens, mobile pantry distributions and more. The program got its start in 1989 to fight hunger issues in the inner-city neighborhoods of Houston, and now it serves more than nine zip codes in the city. According to the organization, after community members came together to to feed residents of the greater Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens, the United Way joined the efforts. The late Congressman Mickey Leland and Houston businessman Pete Van Horn also joined the efforts, and the Select Committee on Hunger was formed.

On Aug. 25, Rep. Ana Hernandez (D-Houston) celebrated the ribbon cutting for the new mobile pantry unit.

“This morning, #TeamHernandez attended the ribbon-cutting of @TargetHunger’s new Mobile Food Pantry! This new service will distribute fresh, healthy foods like dairy, produce and meat to help bridge the gap for those w/ transportation and/or childcare barriers!” Hernandez wrote in a tweet.

The Target Hunger Mobile Food Pantry will serve parts of the community where Target Hunger’s brick-and-mortar pantries are not located. Some of the neighborhoods that will have access to the mobile pantry include Magnolia Park, Pleasantville and Manchester, according to Click 2 Houston.
