Midway, a Houston-area builder, is constructing a large project in the 5th Ward of Houston that will be utilized for mixed-use purposes.
The project encompasses 150 acres in Houston’s 5th Ward and will be a mixture of retail, restaurant, apartments and office space, according to TAMU Research Center.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner noted that this type of community is normally overlooked, but instead will be getting the equivalent of 60 city blocks of brand new shops and apartments, according to Papercity.
“It’s an exciting time to be in the 5th Ward,” Reverend Harry Clemons Jr., the founder of the 5th Ward Community Redevelopment Corporation, said, Papercity reported. “Some of you people have never been in the 5th Ward."
They will also be building a nine-hole par-three public golf course, according to the TAMU Research Center.
“It’s pretty surreal just because it’s the culmination of years of hard work,” Anna Deans, Midway vice president of investment and development said, Papercity reported. “Yet at the same time, it’s really just the beginning. We like to celebrate these big milestones. But we still have a lot of fun and important things ahead of us.”
A rooftop bar and events center will also be going in East River, it will be run by the group behind The Astorian, Papercity reports.
Tenants include the designers of M-K-T Heights mixed-use center - Method Architecture - and TEAL - mechanical systems innovators.
“That’s the hardest thing really — is finding those partners who see the vision (early) the same way that you do and believe in it,” Deans said, according to Papercity. “And believe that through working together, you can actually make it (a) reality. Without partners and early adopters like that, none of this happens.”
According to the TAMU Research Center, a 360-unit apartment called The Laura, 250,000 square feet of office space, 110,000 of retail space, 13,000 square feet of open green space and a nine-hole, three-par golf course will all be included in the mixed-use project.
