Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner paid a visit to one of the city’s most iconic fast food eateries to help celebrate an important milestone.
On Aug. 14, Turner dropped by Cream Burger in the Third Ward to recognize the business for 60 years of serving a quintessential American favorite.
By his own admission, the mayor is a regular customer.
"A #ThirdWard staple, Cream Burger has been serving up hamburgers, shakes and more for 60 years,” he tweeted. “I have often stopped by to grab lunch during the week and on the weekends. I always appreciate Mrs. Beverly and her family's hospitality. They have truly been resilient and strong."
It was in September 1961 when the Greenwood family opened the revered establishment at the corner of Scott and Elgin in the historic neighborhood that’s home to both University of Houston and Texas Southern University.
KHOU reported that Verna and Willie Greenwood opened Cream Burger as a source of income and a way to take control of their life.
Beverly Greenwood, one of the couple’s seven children, told the station that her mother never owned a house.
“She opened this business so she could build a house for us,” she said.
Verna cooked and took orders while Willie chopped vegetables.
The restaurant, which accepts only cash, prides itself on using the freshest ingredients.
Cream Burger’s menu has remained the same for much of its lifetime with the exception of two additions: chili cheese fries and bacon, KHOU reported.
Beverly Greenwood, who runs the eatery with her siblings, hopes to pass it down to the next generation of Greenwoods with the hope of seeing it through “maybe 100 years.”
Cream Burger is located at 3481 Elgin St. and is open from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and 11:30 a.m. to midnight on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
The restaurant is closed on Sundays.
