A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the new Sunnyside Health and Multi-Service Center on July 14.

Once complete and open to the public, the two-story, 57,165-square-foot center will house community service oriented multi-service center programs and health center programs under one roof.

The facility is a part of the Sunnyside Complete Communities Action Plan and the Mayor’s Complete Communities Initiative.

"I joined @houmayor & CM Evans-Shabazz at the Sunnyside Health & Multi-Service Center ground breaking this afternoon," Houston City Councilwoman Sallie Alcorn said in a post to her Twitter account on July 14. "When this $25M building opens next year it will be able to serve more than two times as many community members as the previous Sunnyside MSC."

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner also commented on the new development.

“This project is another example of the outstanding collaboration between my Office of Complete Communities, the Houston Health Department and the community itself,” Turner said. “This new center will make a crucial difference and help improve the lives of people in Sunnyside and surrounding communities, among the most under-resourced in our city.”

Houston Health Department Director Stephen Williams was among other Houston city officials who commented on the news.

“People visiting the new combined center for a community event or a class typically offered at a multi-service center will now also get a chance to see and learn about health services,” Williams said. “I look forward to seeing the ways this center helps Sunnyside residents live healthier and improve their lives.”

The updated facility will replace the current one that was built in 1975. The health and service areas of the new facility will be connected by a two-story atrium. The facility will also include an auditorium, conference rooms and classrooms that will be able to be used by others in the area.
