Mayor Sylvester Turner recently performed at a 713 Day holiday celebration in Houston.
Turner was addressing the crowd when the DJ put on a beat and encouraged him to rap.
With that, Turner gave up a couple of diss verses – at whom it was directed, if anyone, wasn't mentioned – as the crowd cheered. ABC13 Houston caught Turner's act live.
"I wanted you to chill,
but you ain't keeping it real.
You talk about the fo-fo's,
but we'll show you the door."
Shortly after, the mayor broke out in a dance to "Southside" by Lil Keke.
"When @979TheBox’s @JmacGlobal challenged me to lay it down, of course I had to show him how we represent on the Northside," Turner said in a Twitter post later in the day. "We had to chill to be real on this #713Day. #Htown"
Turner's unscripted performance was one of the highlights of the unofficial but long-celebrated 713 holiday in Houston, named for the city's popular area code. The 713 area code was established in 1947 and while the city has area codes, 713 fits nicely into July 13 and gives the city a chance – and an excuse – to have a party.
"Whether your phone number starts with 281, 832, 346, or our first area code, 713—today we celebrate our home town, #HTown!" U.S. House Rep. Lizzie Fletcher (D-Houston) said in her own Twitter post.
This year's festivities included a concert that featured rap stars, including Lil Keke & the Screwed Up Click, Paul Wall and Slim Thug and at Rise Rooftop in Midtown, Houston-themed trivia at Little Woodrow's, a mural hunt and much more. Area restaurants and pubs also got in on the fun with 713-themed offerings.
