Rep. Lizzie Fletcher said she's ready to help Haiti after the assassination of its president and an attack on its first lady.
President Jovenel Moïse, 53, was shot and killed at his home in Port au Prince and First Lady Martine Moise was rushed to the hospital after she was injured in the attack on July 7, as confirmed by Acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph, Fox News reported.
Fletcher said in a Twitter post that she joined members of Congress in a briefing from the U.S. Department of State about the tragedy and how they can help.
"We are ready to assist in this time of crisis," Fletcher said in a Twitter post.
Moïse began serving as president in February 2017 when Michel Martelly resigned from the position, Fox News reported. Haitian citizens had been calling for his resignation as well as opposition leaders.
"The assassination of President Jovenel Moïse and attack on First Lady Martine Moïse is an outrageous act of political violence," the congresswoman said. "My thoughts are with the people of Haiti as well as the many Haitians here in the Houston community."
A United States delegation with representatives from the Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security, Department of State and National Security Council went to Haiti on July 11 in response to the Caribbean island's request for security help and assistance in the investigation after the assassination, a news release from the U.S. Embassy in Haiti said.
Acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph and Prime Minister-Designate Ariel Henry also met with the U.S. delegation in a meeting to "encourage open and constructive dialogue" in an effort to help the country "hold free and fair elections," the embassy release said.
