Rep. Ana Hernandez recently announced that she had obtained $1 million in state funding for renovations and enhancements to Houston’s Selena Quintanilla Perez Park.
The state awarded the funding to the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, Hernandez tweeted.
The park is located at 6402 Market St. in Denver Harbor, a historic community located in the eastern portion of the city.
The park is vital to community events, along with serving recreational sporting leagues as a place to play.
“Selena Quintanilla Perez Park is focal point in the Denver Harbor community and I am honored to be in a position to help secure funding for needed repairs and upgrades to the park and its facilities,” Hernandez said in a tweet.
The City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department will use the secured funds to begin restoration and improvements to the park so that the neighborhood can continue to benefit from its continued use, Hernandez said.
“I look forward to working with the City of Houston, the Denver Harbor residents and all stakeholders to move this project forward, ” she said.
The Lake Jackson-born Selena was known as the "Queen of Tejano Music" because of the enormous impact she had on what once was a male-dominated musical genre.
It's been just over 26 years since she was murdered in the parking lot of a Corpus Christi hotel by the ex-president of her fan club.
Selena’s music catalog includes: “Como la Flor”; “No Me Queda Mas, Amor Prohibido”; “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom”, “La Carcacha” and “Dreaming of You.”
The latter song was to be a part of the singer’s foray into her first English album and was released posthumously on a compilation album.
Selena would have turned 50 this past April and People Magazine reported on her legacy and family’s social media tributes made in her honor.
