Amazon Logistics recently announced that it will open a new facility in League City sometime in early 2022, according to a news report by Click2Houston.
According to Daniel Martin, Amazon spokesperson, the new 180,000-square-foot delivery station would help speed up deliveries in Galveston County and surrounding areas.
"We’re excited to continue our investment in South Texas with a new delivery station in League City to provide fast and efficient delivery for customers and great pay, benefits and a safe work environment for the talented local workforce,” Martin said.
According to a press release from the city's website, the new delivery station would be the last stop for packages before they are delivered to consumers in the area.
"We are extremely excited about Amazon coming to League City,” League City Mayor Pat Hallisey said in the press release. “Not only will it bring jobs, but it will benefit a large majority of our residents, as well as those in neighboring cities, who regularly shop on Amazon.”
Sarah Greer Osborne, director of Communications and Media Relations for League City, stated the new facility also works in line with the city's goal of diversifying its tax base to ensure that there is a more even distribution of commercial and property tax revenue.
"With more than 40% of our city yet to be developed, this is extremely important so our residents don’t shoulder the tax burden of maintaining our city’s current infrastructure and building for our future growth," Osborn told Houston Daily.
The city's press release also stated that in addition to Amazon's starting pay of $15 per hour, full-time workers at the facility will receive other benefits such as medical insurance and a 401(k) plan.
Employees will also reportedly be given paid time off and up to 20 weeks of paid parental and maternity leave in order to offer parents the flexibility they need to assist their families.
Amazon estimates that the facility, which will be located at 2455 Tuscan Lakes Blvd, will employ about 200 people.
