A shooting occurred at the Houston Independent School District's North Forest High School on June 9.

One student was injured in the shooting, which police said was not an active shooter situation.

The shooting took place after a graduation practice and was estimated to have occurred shortly before 10:30 a.m. The report to police told them that shots were fired in the parking lot and a gray Ford truck and a maroon Chrysler drove away.

"I commend the @HISDPolice Department for their quick response and ensuring our students were safe immediately following the shooting at North Forest High School, where the suspect fled the scene," Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Houston) said in a post to her Twitter account on June 9. "There are too many guns on the streets and in the hands of children in and around schools! There must be accountability! I will continue to fight to pass sensible gun safety legislation in Washington to stop the surge of guns and danger to our children!"

Other reactions included a statement released by the Houston Independent School District.

“The HISD Police Department is investigating a shooting that took place this morning in the parking lot of North Forest High School," the statement said. "One individual was treated at the scene and released by paramedics. In addition, HISD Police will have an increased presence at North Forest HS and are working diligently to ensure that all involved are held accountable. HISD remains committed to vigilantly protecting students and staff at our schools. If you have any information about this incident, please contact the HISD Police Department immediately at 713-892-7777, or call 911.”

The male victim of the shooting was hit in the finger and didn't require hospitalization. Police detained a student afterward, but didn't say whether he attended North Forest.
