Emma J. Horst

1937-2021

Emma Johnnie (Kessler) Horst was born in her family home in San Antonio, Texas on August 16, 1937. She left this world to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on May 17, 2021.

Known for her creativity, beauty, intelligence, quick wit, and self-deprecating sarcasm, her most distinguishing quality was her fierce loyalty and devotion to those she loved. Words cannot describe the loss, but her legacy of love will endure forever.

After graduating from Stephen F. Austin High school (Houston, Texas) in 1955, she held various jobs in the professional world. She later married Donald Horst in 1965 and devoted herself to the full-time career of wife, mom and homemaker. When they became empty nesters in 1984, she began her next career in the bookkeeping department of Woodforest National Bank where she worked for 19 years until her retirement.

She is survived by daughter Julianne Horst (Michelle Permenter, partner), and her bonus grandson Campbell Beck. She also leaves behind her beloved Tiahni Spillmon, and her friend, confidant, and caregiver Ahynoam (Annie) Torres, as well as many other cherished friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Julian F. Kessler and Lillie Kessler, her ex-husband of 28 years and friend Donald Lorraine Horst, sister Mary Lee Redden, nephew

Jimmy Earl Redden, paternal grandparents E. A. Kessler and Johnnie Williams, and maternal grandparents C.D. Strange and Emma Kate Strange.

A visitation and memorial service will be held to honor her life on June 5, 2021 at Funeraria del Angel Crespo Navigation, 2516 Navigation Blvd, Houston, TX 77003. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. with service from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. followed by reception with family and friends until 1 p.m. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, money be used to buy a stranger's lunch, donate to an animal shelter, or help someone in need. Mom would love that!

Her family called her Emma Johnnie, close friends called her Johnnie, and acquaintances called her Emma. Her most cherished name, however, was Mom.
