This Memorial Day weekend, there are more than 30 million Americans are expected to travel, and that’s 60% more people traveling than during the Memorial Day weekend last year, during the economic shutdown.

For those who are driving, there may be surprises when they stop at the pump to gas up. AAA notes that gas prices are the highest they’ve been at this point since 2014. Prices are expected to hit $3 per gallon and stay there through the summer.

There were several issues that led to increases in gas prices this month, including the ransomware attack that forced the Colonial Pipeline to go offline for nearly a full week.

But Rep. Kevin Brady says there’s another issue that led to the surging gas prices, which went up more than 20 cents per gallon in some states after the pipeline went offline.

In a May 27 tweet, Brady shared a story from the Houston Chronicle that focused on gas prices and the holiday weekend travel.

“This Memorial Day, Americans will hit the road with gas prices at a seven-year high. Across the country, we are seeing the highest inflation rates in decades thanks to Biden’s economic blunders,” Brady wrote in the tweet.

Still, with thousands taking to the road, troopers with the Department of Public Safety (DPS) are urging Texas residents to take care, pay attention to traffic rules and regulations, and stay safe this holiday weekend. DPS increased the number of troopers on the road starting May 27 and the increased presence will continue through May 31.

"Definitely drive friendly," said DPS Sergeant Nathan Brandley in an interview with KRIS 6 News "We don't need any road rage now that things have been lifted in the state and you can go more places and are out and about. So, drive friendly and drive safe."
