Houston offers a unique experience with a seven-mile underground tunnel system covering 95 city blocks.
While the tunnels are utilized by many downtown office workers, the Downtown Houston Tunnels can also be explored by other locals and tourists.
“The Houston Tunnel System is a network of air-conditioned pedestrian walkways that link dozens of office towers to a variety of convenient locations all over the city,” Houston On The Cheap stated. “They can use the Houston tunnels during their lunch break to visit the doctor, go to the bank, get a haircut, mail a package, get in some shopping and most importantly, grab a bite to eat.”
Built in the 1930s, the tunnels have been expanded in the 1950s and 1960s. To date, it features and houses various restaurants that offers different choices from known fast food chains to local favorites such as Beck’s Prime, Rustika Cafe and Bakery, Treebeards, Post Oak Grill and other international cuisines including Cafe Basil (Vietnamese cuisine) and 5411 Empanadas (Latin American cuisines).
Apart from the great finds in gift stores, flower shops and other specialty shops in the tunnels, drug stores, copy centers, newsstands and dry cleaners are also available.
Open from Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., scheduled and guided tours are also accommodated. With five-star reviews, some of these are Astroville Food Tour of Downtown Houston with Tunnel Access, Haunted Houston Ghost and Pub Walking Tour, Underground Tunnel Tour of Downtown Houston, Astroville Downtown Bar Crawl & Tunnel Access (two cocktails beverages included), Astroville Light Rail Train Tour of Houston with Tunnel Access, Astroville Weekend Downtown Houston Tour With Tunnel Access, and Historical Houston from Below: Morning Underground Tunnel Tour (Small Group).
