A groundbreaking ceremony was held recently for a new Sims Bayou Greenway that would connect its trails in the Houston area.

The Sims Bayou Greenway is part of the $220 million Bayou Greenways 2020 initiative that brings 150-plus miles of connected parks and hike and bike trails along 3,000 acres of underutilized land.

"Last week the community celebrated the groundbreaking of a new segment along Sims Bayou Greenway! The new segment will connect communities east and west of I-45 to the Houston Botanic Garden and beyond," Houston City Councilman Robert Gallegos said.

Gallegos joined the Houston Parks Board, Houston Parks and Recreation Department, Houston Botanic Garden, Perry Homes, Harris County Flood Control District, Gulfgate TIRZ 8 and Hobby Area Management District at the groundbreaking ceremony. The new segment will connect communities on both sides of I-45.

"We are excited to begin construction on this new Sims Bayou Greenway segment as it is an essential connector for communities at opposite ends of I-45,” President and CEO of Houston Parks Board Beth White told CW39. “As part of Bayou Greenways 2020, our goal is to bring Houstonians closer together and strengthen communities in innovative ways. We are thankful to all our project partners for making this key connection a reality.”

The new segment will start at Glenbrook Park where the current Sims Bayou Greenway ends, with the trail heading west along the bayou's south side near the new Houston Botanic Garden.

“Sims Bayou is a Houston treasure with natural banks, it provides a beautiful habitat and a wonderful setting for both the Bayou Greenways Trail and the Houston Botanic Garden," President & General Counsel of Houston Botanic Garden Claudia Gee Vassar told CW39. "As a major destination on Sims Bayou, the Garden looks forward to the connectivity that this trail will provide to people all along the bayou and the opportunity for trail users to enjoy the beauty of Sims and the Garden.”
