Dr. Asha and Farid Virani, in collaboration with Teach For America Houston, have announced the 2025 recipients of the Virani Distinguished School Leader Award. This award acknowledges exceptional principals in Houston who demonstrate remarkable leadership and influence within their schools.

The selection process involved a diverse committee that evaluated over 45 candidates. Eligible nominees had to be Teach For America alumni, full-time principals in Houston, and possess at least two years of leadership experience as principals. The winners were chosen for their courage, resilience, humility, continuous learning, and dedication to community and student success.

This year's recipients each received a $10,000 grant. Among them is Mrs. Parisa Behzadi from Sylvan Rodríguez Elementary School in Houston ISD. A University of Michigan–Ann Arbor graduate with further studies at the University of St. Thomas and Texas A&M University, Behzadi began her career as a 2012 Teach For America corps member. She has held various roles including founding the Newcomer Academy at Fondren Middle School.

Another honoree is Mrs. Ashley Moorman from KIPP Nexus Middle School. With degrees from the University of Texas and the University of Washington, Moorman started her educational career as a 2007 Teach For America corps member. She has served in several leadership roles at KIPP Academy before taking on her current position.

Mr. Justin West from YES Prep Northwest Secondary also received recognition. A graduate of the University of Georgia with further education at the University of St. Thomas, West's career began as a 2011 Teach For America corps member at YES Prep North Forest Secondary. He has since progressed through multiple positions including principal roles at YES Prep Hoffman Middle and his current school.

The Virani Distinguished School Leader Award highlights school leaders who inspire change and promote high-quality education by engaging with their communities to improve educational outcomes.
